The origin comes from the commandment, "וְלִפְנֵ֣י עִוֵּ֔ר לֹ֥א תִתֵּ֖ן מִכְשֹׁ֑ל (Before the blind, do not put a stumbling block)" (). The Hebrew term ''lifnei iver'' is one of the offenses which the Talmud argues to be punishable by excommunication in Judaism.
